Protecting Tiny Smiles

If your child’s teeth are severely chipped, cracked, or decayed, Dr. Ritchie may recommend a pediatric dental crown to restore the appearance and function of your child’s damaged tooth. While we understand that hearing your child needs a crown can be anxiety-inducing, giving them this restoration will help them better protect their growing smiles. Our team makes the process easier for our patients by prioritizing their comfort throughout and ensuring the process is as painless and stress-free as possible.

Why Your Child Might Need a Dental Crown

  • Extensive tooth decay can damage a tooth and make it weak and vulnerable to further decay. A dental crown can safeguard the tooth from further damage and restore its functionality.
  • A broken or chipped tooth can be painful, affect eating and speaking, and lead to further damage. A dental crown can cover and protect the damaged tooth.
  • A large filling may weaken a tooth, leading to a fracture. In such cases, a dental crown can protect the tooth and restore its strength.

  • Dental crowns can also be used for cosmetic reasons to enhance the appearance of a discolored or misshapen tooth.

How Crowns Save Smiles

  1. They protect weak teeth from breaking
  2. They hold cracked teeth together
  3. They cover and support damaged or decayed teeth
  4. They can cover a severely discolored tooth
  5. They can restore broken teeth

Dental crowns are also often used as part of pulpal therapy to preserve the remaining tooth structure. Once treatment is complete, your child should continue routine brushing and flossing.

What to Expect During Your Child’s Appointment

Before your child’s procedure, Dr. Ritchie will take a close look at their tooth and take X-rays. This will help him and his team understand the best way to help your child smile. If they are feeling anxious or nervous, we can offer sedation to help them feel calmer for their visit.

During the actual procedure, Dr. Ritchie will gently remove any decay or damage from the tooth and shape it to fit the crown. He’ll take a mold of your child’s tooth to create a custom crown that fits perfectly, and if wanted or needed, he can place a temporary crown while you wait for the permanent one to be ready. Once the permanent crown is ready, your child will come back for a short visit where Dr. Ritchie will carefully place the crown on the tooth using a special glue. He’ll also make sure it fits and that your child is able to bite down comfortably.

The Aftercare

After their procedure, your child may experience some sensitivity or discomfort, but this should subside within a few days. Dr. Ritchie will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to ensure that your child’s mouth heals properly. Generally, you should encourage your child to rest and avoid strenuous physical activity for the first few days after the procedure. Your child should also avoid sticky or hard foods and maintain regular brushing and flossing.
