While You’re On Your Way
Keeping Them Comfortable Until You’re Here
If a Tooth Was Knocked Out
- Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), and be careful not to touch the root.
- Rinse it gently with water, no soap.
- Place it in a glass of milk and bring it with you.
- Don’t wrap the tooth in a tissue.
- Don’t try to reinsert it yourself.
If a Tooth Is Chipped or Broken
- Rinse their mouth gently with warm water.
- Hold a cold compress against their cheek to reduce swelling.
- Don’t let them chew anything on the side of the damaged tooth.
If They’ve Got a Toothache
- Have them rinse with warm salt water.
- Hold a cold compress against their cheek if there’s swelling.
- Don’t put aspirin directly on the gum as it can irritate the tissue.
If There’s Bleeding Inside the Mouth
- If bleeding won’t slow down, go to your nearest ER.
- Apply gentle pressure with a clean, damp cloth.
- Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.
